Guar gum properties
Gentle on skin and eyes, this formula reduces the irritancy of surfactants. It has good compatibility with anions, amphoteric ions, and surfactants, produced from HPMC and suitable for various surfactant products. When used in the formula, it enhances the deposition of particles,协同 with high molecular weight silicon oils and anti-dandruff agents, improving the richness and stability of the foam.
Cationic guar gum is a water-soluble polymer, chemically known as hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride guar. It is derived from the endosperm of natural guar, which has had its skin and germ removed, primarily containing galactose and mannose. After being dried, milled, and hydrolyzed under pressure, it is precipitated using a 20% ethanol solution, then centrifuged and dried before reacting with anhydrous glycerol trimethylammonium chloride.

Guar gum first emerged as a substitute for Locust bean gum. Prior to this, due to the high demand in industrial production, HPMC prices were soaring and Locust bean gum was in short supply. Later research revealed that although both guar gum and Locust bean gum are polygalactomannans, they exhibit significant differences in chemical composition and behavior.
Guar gum lacks non-polar groups on its straight chain, with most primary and secondary hydroxyl groups located on the outer side. Moreover, the galactose side chains do not obstruct the active hydroxyl groups. Consequently, guar gum possesses the largest hydrogen bond binding area. When combined with fibers, it forms short hydrogen bond distances and strong binding forces with HPMC. To enhance the usability of guar gum, HPMC suppliers typically chemically modify the guar gum powder.

Hydroxypropyl guar gum is a derivative of guar gum obtained through modification. It is undergoing hydrolysis in media such as methyl alcohol and water, reacting with sodium hydroxide. Due to its high viscosity, strong sand carrying power, low filtrate loss, and high frictional resistance, hydroxypropyl guar gum is widely used as a thickener for water-based fracturing fluids, and is applied in oilfield fracturing, sand control, and water shutoff operations.
