The earliest ancient paper from the Western Han Dynasty was found in 1933 at the ancient beacon tower in the Lop Nur region of Xinjiang, dating no later than 49 BC. In May 1957, ancient paper unearthed in the Baliqiao Bridge in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province was scientifically analyzed and identified as Western Han hemp paper, dating no later than 118 BC. In 1973, two pieces of hemp paper, dating no later than 52 BC, were found at the Juyan Shoulder Water Golden Pass in Gansu. In 1978, three pieces of hemp paper from the reign of Emperor Xuan of the Western Han Dynasty (73-49 BC) were unearthed in Fengyuan Village, Fuping, Shaanxi. In 1979, five pieces of eight pieces of Western Han hemp paper were unearthed at the Western Han beacon tower site in the Malquwan area of Dunhuang County, Gansu.
