Operating Principle
Alcohol recovery towers are a type of tower for vapor-liquid contact in distillation processes, also known as distillation towers or fractional distillation towers. There are mainly two types: plate towers and packed towers. Based on the operating mode, they can be further classified into continuous distillation towers and batch distillation towers.
Steam enters from the bottom of the tower and contacts the descending liquid in a countercurrent manner. During this contact, the more volatile (low boiling point) components in the descending liquid continuously transfer to the steam, while the less volatile (high boiling point) components in the steam transfer to the descending liquid. As the steam approaches the top of the tower, its concentration of volatile components increases, and as the descending liquid approaches the bottom, its concentration of non-volatile components accumulates, achieving the separation of components. The steam rising from the top of the tower enters a condenser, where part of the condensed liquid is returned as reflux to the top of the tower and the rest is removed as distillate. The liquid exiting the bottom of the tower is partially sent to a reboiler, where it is heated and evaporated, with the steam returning to the tower, and the remaining liquid is removed as bottoms.
The basic principle of distillation involves part of the liquid being vaporized, utilizing the different volatility characteristics of its components to achieve separation. Distillation can be categorized by its operational methods into: simple distillation, flash distillation, rectification, and special rectification, among others.
