The basic heat transfer element of a finned tube heat exchanger is the finned tube, which is composed of a base tube and fins. The base tube is typically a round tube, but can also be elliptical or flat. The finned tube heat exchanger is one of the successful discoveries made during the improvement of tube-type heat exchangers. This method is still widely used in all types of tube-type heat exchanger surface heat transfer enhancement techniques. It is not only extensively applied in the power, chemical, petrochemical, air conditioning, and refrigeration engineering for single finned tube heat exchangers.
