Diesel is the primary fuel for diesel engines.
Light diesel oil is typically used in high-speed diesel engines; medium and low-speed diesel engines may use light diesel or heavy fuel, which has poor volatility and is of lower quality, such as crude oil and residuum. Diesel engines spray high-pressure fuel in a mist into the cylinders, where it mixes with air and burns. Therefore, when burning crude oil and residuum, diesel engines must filter out impurities and moisture, and also preheat and insulate the fuel supply system to reduce fuel viscosity for easier transportation and injection. If the diesel engine is designed with an appropriate combustion chamber, it can also burn light fuels like ethanol, methanol, and gasoline. Additives can be added to improve the cetane number and enhance the ignition properties of light fuels, or they can be mixed with diesel. Some gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, biogas, and blast furnace gas, can also be used as fuel for diesel engines, but typically, the engine operates primarily on the gaseous fuel, with a small amount of diesel used to ignite it, such engines being known as dual-fuel internal combustion engines.

This excitation method features: 1) The excitation power source varies with the nature and magnitude of the load, thereby serving as a strong excitation function, with superior excitation performance; 2) The AVR is in parallel regulation (as opposed to the series regulation of the aforementioned AVRs). In the event of damage, with appropriately set reactors L and compensator T, the generator terminal voltage can still be maintained within a certain normal range, ensuring uninterrupted power generation and supply, thus offering high reliability. The addition of reactors L and T, as well as external CR and SCR, does not significantly increase the complexity of the excitation system, nor the number of components and weight compared to the aforementioned excitation methods.
