Diesel generator sets are composed of diesel engines and synchronous AC generators. The power that the diesel engine can use is limited by the mechanical and thermal loads of the components, thus, the allowable continuous operating power is defined as rated power.
Diesel engines must not exceed their rated power; otherwise, it may shorten their lifespan and even cause accidents.
(1) Rated Power of Diesel Engines; According to national standards, the rated power marked on diesel engine labels is divided into the following four categories: 1) 15-minute Power: The power that the diesel engine is allowed to operate for 15 minutes. This includes the rated power for applications that may require short-term overload operation and acceleration performance, such as in cars and motorcycles. 2) 1-hour Power: The effective power that the diesel engine is allowed to run continuously for 1 hour. This applies to diesel engines used in wheel tractors, locomotives, and ships, among others. 3) 12-hour Power: The effective power that the diesel engine is allowed to run continuously for 12 hours, which is commonly referred to as the rated power. This includes diesel engines used in power stations and construction machinery. 4) Continuous Power: The power that the diesel engine is allowed to run continuously for an extended period.
