Stainless steel refers to steel that resists corrosion from weak corrosive media such as air, steam, and water, as well as from chemical corrosive media like acids, alkalis, and salts, also known as acid-resistant steel.
In practical applications, steel resistant to weak corrosive mediums is commonly referred to as stainless steel, while steel resistant to chemical mediums is known as acid-resistant steel. Due to the differences in chemical composition between the two, the former is not necessarily resistant to chemical corrosion, whereas the latter generally possesses corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel depends on the alloy elements present in the steel.
Basic alloy elements of stainless steel include nickel, molybdenum, titanium, niobium, copper, nitrogen, etc., to meet the requirements of various applications for the structure and properties of stainless steel. Stainless steel is prone to corrosion by chloride ions due to the isotopic nature of chromium, nickel, and chlorine, which can undergo exchange and assimilation to form corrosion in stainless steel.
The corrosion resistance of stainless steel with increasing carbon content decreases, hence most stainless steels have low carbon content, not exceeding 1.2%, with some steels having a Wc (carbon content) as low as 0.03% (e.g., 00Cr12). The main alloying element in stainless steel is Cr (chromium), and it is only when the Cr content reaches a certain level that the steel exhibits corrosion resistance. Therefore, the general Cr content in stainless steel is at least 10.5%. Stainless steel also contains elements like Ni, Ti, Mn, N, Nb, Mo, Si, Cu, which make it resistant to corrosion, pitting, rust, or wear. Stainless steel is also one of the strongest materials used in construction metals. Due to its excellent corrosion resistance, it ensures structural components maintain the integrity of the engineering design. Chromium-containing stainless steels also combine mechanical strength and high ductility, making them easy to process and manufacture, and meeting the needs of architects and structural designers.
