Due to the long-term open-air stacking of waste at landfill sites, mosquitoes and flies are easily bred, pathogens spread, and unpleasant odors are produced. Long-term outdoor waste stacking, with factors like rain, leads to flowing waste, causing damp decomposition and leachate. This污水 contaminates the surrounding environment and residents, posing significant harm, which in severe cases can be fatal; burying waste properly can isolate it from groundwater and rain, keeping it dry and away from air, thus preventing extensive decomposition. The main function of landfill site closure treatment is: first, to reduce the environmental damage caused by waste and minimize the decomposition of leachate; second, to effectively control the gases produced by waste; finally, to isolate waste from livestock and people, ensuring it does not cause severe harm to the surroundings.


Landfill Geomembrane Construction Plan

First, prepare by cleaning, leveling, and compacting the base surface to be paved; then, excavate soil using a bulldozer to cover the base surface, ensuring a layer of at least 30 centimeters thick. If loess is unavailable, substitute with yellow sand or fine sand. After filling and compacting the soil or sand layer, prepare for the next step: digging underground drainage channels and distributing drainage pipes.

Next, level and compact the prepared soil base, ensuring the surface is smooth and free of stones protruding over 2cm or obvious small holes. After inspection, lay the bentonite waterproof geotextile naturally and flat on the soil protection layer, with the non-woven side facing down and the woven side facing up. Note: Construction of the bentonite waterproof geotextile should be done under non-rainy or snowy weather. In case of rain or snow, cover the geotextile with a plastic film to prevent the bentonite from expanding when it comes into contact with water. The overlap of the bentonite waterproof geotextile should be at least 20cm, and evenly sprinkle bentonite overlap powder along the overlap edges. Sprinkle water to make it adhere and then compact it to maintain flatness. After laying, check for any tears or holes in the geotextile and repair them as needed, then prepare for the next step.

Then, lay the HDPE geomembrane, also known as high-density polyethylene geomembrane or HDPE waterproofing geomembrane, which is used for waterproofing projects in landfill sites. Europe began using HDPE geomembranes in the 1980s. With increasing national awareness and emphasis on the ecological environment in China, the geomembrane has been widely applied in landfill site treatment. Place the HDPE waterproofing geomembrane over the bentonite waterproofing mat, ensuring it is stretched and flat without large bubbles, pressed flat to prevent damage from heavy machinery like excavators, turning, or moving over it; the overlapping edges of the geomembranes should be at least ten centimeters, and the edges should be clean with no debris or stones. Prepare for welding, first test-weld two geomembrane pieces about a meter long to adjust the welding machine's temperature, then have a professional welder perform the welding. The welding should be done simultaneously with the geomembrane laying until completion. Note: During the geomembrane laying process, have an excavator gently and evenly move soil to cover the geomembrane, and perform welding and backfilling simultaneously to prevent damage to the geomembrane. Cover the geomembrane with a protective layer of soil that is at least thirty centimeters thick to prevent plant roots from piercing the geomembrane, and then compact the soil layer.

Once the geomembrane is laid, proceed to install long-fiber nonwoven geotextile manually, ensuring the fabric is stretched and laid flat with overlaps of at least ten centimeters. After laying, inspect the long-fiber geotextile for any damage or holes and repair as necessary. Prepare for the next step. Then, cover the long-fiber geotextile with soil, maintaining a thickness of at least thirty centimeters, and compact and flatten it. Next, lay short-fiber geotextile on the compacted soil layer, using manual rolling, ensuring the fabric is stretched and laid flat with overlaps of at least ten centimeters. After laying, check the integrity of the geotextile and address any issues promptly.
