The CST (Capillary Suction Time) test is a method to demonstrate sludge filtration and condition, having been used internationally since 1970. The filtration properties of sludge affect the output of various dewatering equipment, including: drying beds, belt presses, vacuum filters, filter presses, and centrifugal separators, among others.
Capillary water absorption pressure generated by the filter paper is used to "absorb" moisture from sludge. The rate of moisture penetration into the filter paper depends on the sludge condition and the filterability of the paper cake formed on the filter paper. The CST is obtained from two electrodes placed at standard intervals on the funnel. The time from the start to the passage through these two electrodes is defined as the CST.
The force generated by capillary absorption in the funnel exceeds the apex of hydrostatic pressure, hence the test is not dependent on the amount of sludge; CST can be produced as long as there is sludge.
