Formative Pine, also known as Red-bark Pine or Shortleaf Pine, is a needle-leaved evergreen tree of the Pinaceae family, with the Formative Pine reaching up to 30 meters in height and a trunk diameter of up to 1 meter. The bark beneath is gray-brown, split into irregular scaly plates, with reddish-brown cracks and upper bark. The main branches of the Formative Pine are either spreading flat or slant upward, while older trees have a flat crown. The small branches are robust, yellow-brown, glossy, and free of powder. The winter buds are oval, with a pointed tip, slightly resinous, and the bud scales are reddish-brown. The canopy of the Formative Pine is conical or pyramid-shaped in youth, and ovate or irregularly trapezoidal in middle age.

The crown of solitary mature pine trees, shaped like flat-topped, elliptical, or umbrella, is robust and upright, forming a towering tree shape. Occasionally, they can grow into twisted and varied trunks, exuding an aura of strength and elegance.

The shaped pine seeds are 6-8 mm long, with wings measuring 1.5-2.0 cm, which are 2-3 times the length of the seeds. Flowering occurs in May, and the cones mature in the first and second weeks of October the following year. Young shaped pine trees have a pyramidal or conical crown, while mature trees have an ovate or irregular trapezoidal shape. Isolated old trees have a flat-topped, oblate, or umbrella-shaped crown. The trunk is robust and upright, forming a towering tree shape, and sometimes it can grow into a twisted and graceful trunk, appearing sturdy and majestic.
