Two-stage reverse osmosis equipment

Reverse osmosis is a core technology in the water treatment industry, utilizing the natural direction of water permeation in nature and the selective permeability of reverse osmosis membranes to completely separate impurities, effectively improving the quality of the effluent. The process operates physically, without adding any chemicals or disinfectants, thus avoiding chemical alterations. Reverse osmosis equipment comes in single-stage and double-stage models. What are the differences between them?

1. Appearance Differences

Single-membrane reverse osmosis equipment is equipped with a vertical pump, whereas dual-polar reverse osmosis equipment features two vertical pumps.

2. Process Flow Differences

Single-stage reverse osmosis equipment, also known as first-stage reverse osmosis equipment, is a device that removes certain substances from water by using a single reverse osmosis membrane separation technology. Water that is produced directly from the raw water after pretreatment system and fine filter, and then sent to the reverse osmosis unit by a high-pressure pump, is called single-stage reverse osmosis water.

The two-stage reverse osmosis (RO) system, also known as double-stage RO, involves the water being filtered through two RO membranes. It starts with the raw water being pressurized and sent to the pretreatment system for coarse filtration, followed by passing through a fine filter. The filtered water is then pressurized by a high-pressure pump and sent to the primary RO system. The water produced by this system is further pressurized by a second high-pressure pump and sent to the secondary RO system, yielding the double-stage RO water. Double-stage RO produces water with a higher salt removal rate than single-stage RO. When the quality of the raw water is similar to tap water, the double-stage RO technology can achieve a conductivity value of 10 μs/cm. In general, industries or other sectors with no stringent water quality requirements will opt for single-stage RO equipment. However, if the raw water quality is poor or there are strict water quality demands, double-stage RO equipment will be used.

3. Principle Differences

Single-stage reverse osmosis equipment and dual-stage reverse osmosis equipment operate on different principles. Single-stage reverse osmosis technology is commonly used for desalination of seawater and brackish water; water softening treatment; wastewater treatment; and purification, concentration, and separation in the food and chemical industries.

The separation process in the second-stage reverse osmosis method does not require heating and involves no phase change. It boasts advantages such as low energy consumption, compact equipment size, simple technology, easy operation and maintenance, non-pollution, strong adaptability, and a wide range of applications.
