How to Determine if an Oil Vapor Recovery System is Operating Properly?

    2025-02-25

Observe the status of the indicator lights

    Method:
Modern gas station vapor recovery systems typically come equipped with operational indicator lights. When the vapor recovery equipment is functioning properly, the indicator light will be illuminated. If the light does not come on, it may indicate a malfunction, and the equipment should be inspected.

    Note:

Some devices' indicator light designs may not be very intuitive; the lights being on does not necessarily mean the equipment is operating perfectly. Therefore, it is necessary to combine other methods for comprehensive judgment.

Section II: Inspect Equipment Appearance and Sealing Integrity

    Method:

Visual Inspection: Check that the vapor recovery equipment is clean and all interfaces are sealed tightly. A clean appearance and well-sealed interfaces typically indicate that the equipment is operating normally. Sealability Inspection: Pay particular attention to the various connection points of the vapor recovery system, such as the manual fueling nozzle cap, oil discharge port, vapor recovery cap, collection tank pipe opening, fuel nozzle vapor recovery pipe, and valves. Use portable organic vapor analyzers (PID or FID) and other tools for on-site testing to ensure that VOCs leakage concentrations do not exceed the specified standards (e.g., 500ppm).

    Note:

If uncovered interfaces, odors, or leakage are detected during the inspection process, it indicates that there may be issues with the oil vapor recovery equipment, and they should be addressed promptly.

III. Evaluate the Effectiveness of Vapor Recovery

    Method:

Gas-to-liquid ratio testing: During the refueling process at gas stations, the ratio of the volume of recovered gasoline vapor to the volume of gasoline liquid added (gas-to-liquid ratio) is measured using flowmeters and other tools. The gas-to-liquid ratio should be within the specified range (e.g., 0.95 to 1.05) to reflect the effectiveness of the vapor recovery system. Emission concentration testing: Sampling and analysis of the exhaust gases treated by the vapor recovery device are conducted to measure the concentration of VOCs. The emission concentration should comply with relevant environmental protection standards (e.g., not exceeding 35 mg/m³).

    Please note:

Test results that exceed the specified limits may indicate that the vapor recovery equipment is not functioning properly or there are other issues.

    Understanding Equipment Maintenance and Care

    Method:

Inquire with gas station staff about the daily maintenance and upkeep of vapor recovery equipment. Gas stations should regularly clean, inspect, and repair the equipment to ensure proper operation. Review maintenance records: If possible, examine the maintenance records of the vapor recovery equipment to understand its maintenance history and condition.

    Note:

Lack of effective maintenance and care can lead to decreased performance or malfunctions in vapor recovery equipment.

In summary, determining whether an oil vapor recovery unit is functioning properly requires a comprehensive assessment of various factors, including the status of indicator lights, the unit's appearance and sealing, the effectiveness of oil vapor recovery, and the maintenance and care of the equipment. These methods effectively evaluate the operational status of the oil vapor recovery unit and help identify potential issues in a timely manner.
