A wide variety of painting and calligraphy felt is available in the market. Due to differences in materials and craftsmanship, various types of painting and calligraphy felt have emerged. The materials commonly used to make painting and calligraphy felt are usually wool or synthetic fibers.

1. Material Variations: Some painting and calligraphy felt is made of pure wool. This pure wool felt is categorized into domestic wool for first-class felt and imported wool for top-grade felt. Some felts are made of synthetic fibers, known as synthetic painting and calligraphy felts. Other felt materials are a blend of wool and synthetic fibers, referred to as blended painting and calligraphy felts.
2. Different manufacturing processes: Some calligraphy and painting felt is wrapped with dense fabric, usually treated with high-end felt. Others are merely sealed with thread, only having edge stitching. Some are not treated at all, being in a direct-cut state.
