    A multi-level parking garage equipped with mechanical parking systems that lift or horizontally shift vehicles on loading platforms is known as a lift-and-shift parking garage. Due to the variety of lift-and-shift parking system designs, which can range from large to small and have strong adaptability to different sites, parking garages utilizing this type of equipment are quite common.

    The multi-level parking garage operates on the principle that each parking space features a lift platform. The platform for the vehicle to be parked or retrieved moves up, down, and horizontally to reach the ground level. Drivers enter the garage, park or retrieve their vehicles, and the process is completed. Vehicles parked in such garages only move horizontally and do not require lifting or lowering. To make space for a new vehicle, the upper or lower level must be shifted horizontally to clear a space. The lift platform is then raised or lowered to ground level, allowing the driver to drive the car in or out of the garage.

    For locations with high vehicle traffic, a multi-level parking garage with 300 to 500 spaces requires an investment of 5 to 8 million yuan. At a rate of 5 yuan per hour, it would take many years to recoup the costs. Meanwhile, the payback period for commercial real estate parking lots is typically 8 to 10 years, while for residential parking facilities, it exceeds 15 years.


    In the operation of multi-level parking garages, there are additional costs involved, such as regular maintenance of equipment and the hiring of additional staff to operate them. According to the manufacturer's specifications, the maintenance fee for each parking space is 50 yuan per month, which does not include the cost of replacing entire units. Moreover, a multi-level parking garage requires staff to manage parking, with at least three full-time employees needed for 100 parking spaces. Currently, some operators of multi-level parking garages in the city have decided to simply discontinue their use due to cost considerations, resulting in wasted resources.
