Common tearing failures in belt conveyors' belts

The conveyor belt is an indispensable component in the entire belt conveyor system. If the conveyor belt fails during operation, the entire conveyor system is generally unusable unless a new belt is installed. After prolonged use, a common issue is tearing. What are the specific types of tearing faults that are commonly encountered?

1. Foreign object scratch and tear

When the foreign object is larger than the longitudinal size of the chute, it gets caught at the bottom and moves forward through the conveyor belt, increasing pressure, thereby scratching the belt and causing it to tear.

2. Belt deviation and tearing

During operation, if the conveyor belt shifts significantly to one side, it may form wrinkles and folds on that side, leading to tearing due to uneven tension or being caught and scraped. This phenomenon is quite noticeable and easy to observe, so it's important to adjust the belt promptly when it is found to be off-center.

Material Card Compression Blocking and Tearing

In extraordinary situations, large pieces of material become trapped between the trough edge and the conveyor belt, resulting in severe compression and tearing of the belt. Another scenario occurs when the feeding at the loading point suddenly increases, causing a blockage in the conveyor belt's material loading. After prolonged friction, this leads to the tearing of the conveyor belt.

4. Core Tear

Under the forceful impact, conveyor belts can sometimes cause the steel wire ropes inside to break. After prolonged wear, pressure, bending, and pulling, the broken wire ropes may protrude through the cover rubber at the joints or areas of severe wear. Once exposed to a certain length, they may get tangled in the drums or idlers. As the conveyor belt operates, the wire ropes are pulled out from the cover rubber, resulting in tears.

Belt conveyors often experience tearing issues over time with their belts. The most common problems are the four mentioned above. Therefore, it is crucial to properly maintain the conveyor belts and promptly repair any tears to avoid affecting their normal operation.
