Lab Manufacturers Remind of Safety Precautions for Laboratory Fume Hoods

    2024-06-11

In chemical laboratories, various harmful gases, odors, moisture, as well as flammable, explosive, and corrosive substances are produced during experiments. To prevent the spread of pollutants within the lab, fume hoods should be used near the source of contamination. A fan is a mechanical device that relies on input mechanical energy to increase gas pressure and expel gases; it is a type of driven fluid machinery. Below, the laboratory manufacturer offers the following precautions for the use of fume hoods:
    1. Before using the fume hood, check the power supply, as well as the normal operation of all switches and piping for water, drainage, and gases.
    2. Turn on the lighting equipment and check if the visual sources and the interior of the cabinet are functioning normally.
    3. Turn on the exhaust fan and listen for normal operation within about 3 minutes.
    4. When inspecting the fume hoods in the above sequence, if any issues are found, please immediately stop using them and notify the maintenance unit for handling.
Before turning off the fume hood, the exhaust fan should continue to operate for a few minutes to ensure complete exhaust of the cabinet's waste gases.
    6. After use, the fume hood should be wiped clean inside and out, and all switches and windows should be turned off.
    7. Ventilation should be maintained in the laboratory even when fume hoods are not in use, as it benefits the health of the staff.
    8. Ventilation hoods should be supplemented with 10 minutes of fresh air (i.e., window ventilation) every 2 hours during use. For use exceeding 5 hours, windows should be left open to prevent negative pressure inside the room.
No experiments to be conducted inside the fume hoods without ventilation.
Laboratory Manufacturers Remind You: Do Not Stick Your Head Inside the Fume Hood While Operating or Inspecting!
    11. Prohibit the storage or experimentation of flammable and explosive materials inside fume hoods.
    12. Prohibit placing mobile power strips or wires inside fume hoods.
When moving the upper and lower windows, please do so slowly and gently to avoid damaging your hand with the door handle.
During the experiment, it is recommended to position the window 100-150 mm above the desk surface.
The operation area of the fume hood must remain clear, and items should be kept away from the surrounding area of the fume hood.
    16. Laboratory manufacturers advise operators to avoid storing excessive equipment or chemicals on the ventilation cabinet surface when the fume hood is not in use, and to prohibit long-term accumulation.
