Stainless steel is a type of steel that is resistant to rust. In fact, some stainless steels possess both rust resistance and acid resistance (corrosion resistance). The rust and corrosion resistance of stainless steel are due to the formation of a rich chrome oxide film (passive film) on its surface. This rust and corrosion resistance is relative. Tests show that the corrosion resistance of steel in weak media such as air and water, and oxidizing media such as nitric acid, increases with the chromium content in the steel. When the chromium content reaches a certain percentage, there is a sudden change in the steel's corrosion resistance, from being prone to rust to being resistant to rust, from being non-resistant to corrosion to being corrosion-resistant. There are many ways to classify stainless steel. By the microstructure at room temperature, they can be categorized into martensitic, austenitic, ferritic, and duplex stainless steels; by the main chemical composition, they are basically divided into chrome stainless steel and chrome-nickel stainless steel systems; by application, there are types like nitric acid-resistant, sulfuric acid-resistant, seawater-resistant stainless steels, etc.; by corrosion type, they can be divided into pitting-resistant, stress corrosion-resistant, intergranular corrosion-resistant stainless steels, etc.; and by functional characteristics, they can be further categorized into non-magnetic, easy-to-cut, low-temperature, high-strength stainless steels, and more. Due to the excellent corrosion resistance, formability, compatibility, and toughness over a wide temperature range, stainless steel materials are widely used in heavy industry, light industry, consumer goods, architectural decoration, and other industries.
