The application of composite powder, involving the spraying of soft, abrasion-resistant sealant coatings on the matrix, has rapidly emerged as a high-temperature sealing and gap-filling technology in the aerospace industry. It is one of the significant applications of modern thermal spray coatings. The use of abrasion-resistant coatings in the contacting movements of mating parts allows for the automatic formation of necessary gaps, providing optimal sealing. Currently, high-tech abrasion-resistant coatings are typically made from blends or agglomerates of two powders, prepared using flame or plasma spray methods. Generally, these coatings consist of metallic bodies and non-metallic fillers, such as graphite, polyester, and boron nitride. The fillers' role is to weaken the overall integrity of the coating, thereby enhancing its abrasion resistance. A range of sprayable abrasion-resistant coating materials has been developed, used on surface air-sealing locations, between compressor or turbine blades and metallic surface structures or casings, achieving good sealing results. Abrasion-resistant coatings can also be applied in labyrinth seals, used to guide cooling air, reduce losses of compressed air from the engine, and maintain pressure balance on the rotor shaft.
