Mechanism of electromagnetic ultrasonic generation

Metal conductors in a variable magnetic field will generate eddy currents internally. Simultaneously, due to the Lorentz force acting on any current in a magnetic field, the metal medium will produce stress waves under alternating stresses. Stress waves within the ultrasonic frequency range are referred to as ultrasonic waves.

On the contrary, due to the reversibility of this effect, the returning sound pressure causes the vibration of the particle to change the voltage at the ends of the eddy current coil under the action of the magnetic field. Therefore, it can be received and amplified by the receiving device and displayed. We call the ultrasonic waves excited and received in this way electromagnetic ultrasonics.

In the aforementioned methods, the transducer is no longer merely a combination of an eddy current coil for alternating current transmission and an external fixed magnetic field. The metal surface itself is an essential component of the transducer, with the conversion of electricity to sound being accomplished through the metal surface.

Electromagnetic ultrasound can only be generated on conductive media, thus its application is limited to conductive media.



Electromagnetic Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

From an application perspective, a significant advantage of electromagnetic ultrasonic over traditional piezoelectric ultrasonic is that it does not require the use of a coupling agent.

Derived from this, a series of application advantages of electromagnetic ultrasonic over traditional ultrasonic sensors can be inferred.

Non-contact detection (with a lift-off up to 6mm) is achievable, enhancing reliability and repeatability.

No coupling agent required; suitable for testing in both high and low temperature environments.

Unaffected by the workpiece surface, low requirement for material surface treatment; post-processing not needed after testing; significantly enhances work efficiency and reduces labor intensity; fast testing speed.

Traditional piezoelectric ultrasonic testing speed is generally around 10 meters per minute, while EMAT can reach up to 40 meters per minute, even faster.

The sound wave has a long propagation distance. The ultrasonic waves excited in steel pipes or rods by EMAT do not require a coupling agent, and can propagate around the workpiece for several laps. During longitudinal defect detection of steel pipes or rods, neither the probe nor the workpiece needs to be rotated, simplifying the mechanical structure of the flaw detection equipment.

The number of channels and probes used is minimal. The EMAT flaw detection equipment uses fewer channels and probes than piezoelectric ultrasound, while achieving the same functionality.

Strong in detecting natural defects.

EMAT can accurately detect defects such as folds, double skins, and holes on steel pipe surfaces that are difficult to inspect.
