How do lotus seeds grow into seedlings?

We often see lotus flowers, but many people are curious about how they grow. Are lotus flowers grown from seeds? Why can a piece of lotus root buried in the soil also produce lotus flowers? Fenghe Garden Aquatic Planting reveals the mystery! Lotus flowers are a type of perennial aquatic plant that reproduces through both rhizomes and seeds. They first appeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty of our country!

The Evolution Process from Lotus Seeds to Seedlings to Full-Grown Lotus Explained

One, Sowing Time:莲子 (lotus seeds) have no dormancy period. As long as the water temperature is maintained above 16°C, sowing can be done year-round. Under suitable temperature and light conditions, it takes 50-60 days from sowing to blooming in spring, and 60-80 days in autumn.

Seed Treatment: The lotus seed shell is hard and dense, and it needs to be manually cracked before soaking. One end of the lotus seed has a small pointed tip, while the other end has a small concave point. Rub the end with the concave point on rough concrete ground or crack a small opening with a vice, being careful not to injure the seed embryo or remove the shell.

Three: Seed Soaking and Germination: During summer, water temperatures between 20℃-30℃ are ideal for lotus seed germination. Depending on the amount of seeds, use a bowl or basin to hold water, ensuring the seeds are fully submerged. Place them indoors and change the water twice a day; germination can occur within one week. After sprouting, place them in a sunny spot, increase lighting, and keep them well-watered. After two weeks, fine roots and 2-3 tender young lotus leaves will emerge. Once the leaves resemble coins and the root system is formed, they can be transplanted.

Four, Seedling (Lotus Seedling) Transplanting: Choose unbottomed ceramic pots or plastic flower pots with a diameter of 18cm to 30cm. Fill the pots with half pot of garden soil or river塘 mud free of chemical pollution. Pre-soak the pots with water two weeks in advance without fertilizing. During transplanting, press the delicate roots of the small lotus seedlings into the soil. Plant one seedling per pot, and add a moderate amount of water after transplanting, ensuring the water does not submerge the small lotus leaves.

Five, Autumn and Winter Management: After transplanting 2-3 weeks and entering the peak growth period, if the leaves turn yellow, apply a small amount of NPK compound fertilizer, applying it thinly and frequently. Lotus prefers warmth and light and cannot tolerate shade. When the external temperature drops below 16°C, the growth slows down. It should be moved to a sunlit greenhouse!
