Cautionary Notes for Maintaining Roadside Stones

Although roadside curbs are sturdy and durable, they can develop issues over long-term use. To extend the lifespan of curb stones and prevent problems, here are some maintenance aspects to consider for curb stones.

Firstly, end the long-term coverage of carpets and debris.

To ensure the paving slabs can breathe properly, avoid covering them with carpets and debris for extended periods on the roadside. Otherwise, moisture within the paving slabs cannot evaporate through the stone pores, leading to unpleasant changes due to excessive moisture and increased water content.

Do not excessively use non-neutral detergents:

To clean, most cleaning agents contain acidity or alkalinity. Therefore, if cleaning agents of unknown composition are used for an extended period, the surface of roadside stones may lose their luster. The residual non-neutral chemicals will become the primary cause of future stone diseases.

Do not touch non-neutral items.

All stones fear acids and alkalis, and rusted stones in Zigong are no exception. For instance, acids typically cause pyrite in granite to oxidize and turn yellow, while they decompose calcium carbonate in marble, leading to surface erosion. Alkalis also erode the grain boundaries of feldspar and timing silicate crystals in granite, causing grain spalling. Therefore, non-neutral objects are the cause of damaging the stone's mirror-like surface.

Do not rinse directly with water.

Pavement pavers are a breathable, porous material, making them susceptible to absorbing moisture and pollutants through water dissolution. If the pavers absorb an excessive amount of water and pollutants, it inevitably leads to various stone diseases. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid washing or cleaning the surface of the pavers with water or a damp mop.

Five, do not apply wax arbitrarily:

There are many types of waxes on the market, such as water-based waxes, fatty acid waxes, oil-based waxes, and acrylic waxes. These waxes generally contain acidic and alkaline substances, which not only clog the pores of stone for breathing but also form wax residue with dirt and dust, leading to a yellowish surface on the stone.
