Membrane separation is a method that utilizes the differential selectivity of the membrane to the various components in a mixture, driven by an external energy or chemical potential difference, to separate, grade, purify, and concentrate binary or multi-component gas or liquid mixtures. Membrane pores are at the nanoscale, suitable for separating solutes with molecular weights of 100 to 1000 and molecular sizes of approximately 1nm, which is referred to as nanofiltration (NF). The transmembrane pressure required for NF membrane separation is generally 0.5 to 2.0 MPa, which is lower by 0.5 to 3 MPa than the pressure needed for reverse osmosis membranes to achieve the same osmotic energy.MPa. Based on operating pressure and separation limits, NF can be qualitatively positioned between reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, and is sometimes referred to as "low-pressure reverse osmosis" or "loose reverse osmosis."
