Introduction to the Selection of Blow Molding Molds
Don't solely focus on product design and neglect the plastic mold manufacturing.
Some users, when developing new products or prototypes, often initially focus solely on product research and development, neglecting communication with plastic mold manufacturers. There are two benefits to contacting mold manufacturers early after the preliminary design of the product is determined:
1. We guarantee the products we design have excellent forming processes, and the design will not be altered due to the difficulty in processing parts.
2. Mold manufacturers can prepare designs in advance to prevent rushed consideration and impact on the project timeline.
3. To produce high-quality plastic molds, close collaboration between both suppliers and buyers is essential to reduce costs and shorten production cycles.
Don't just focus on price; consider quality, lead time, and service from multiple angles.
There are many types of molds, which can be roughly divided into ten categories. Different mold types are chosen for forming based on various requirements such as part material, physical and chemical properties, mechanical strength, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, service life, and cost-effectiveness.
2. High-precision molds require processing on high-precision CNC machines, with strict requirements for material and forming processes. CAD/CAE/CAM mold technology must also be employed for design and analysis.
3. Some parts require specialized shaping requirements during production, necessitating advanced techniques such as hot runners, gas-assisted molding, and nitrogen cylinders.
4. Manufacturers should have CNC, EDM, wire-cutting machine tools, CNC profiling milling equipment, high-precision grinding machines, high-precision three-coordinate measuring instruments, computer design and related software, etc.
5. For general large-scale stamping molds (such as automotive cover molds), consider whether the machine tool has a blanking edge mechanism, as well as edge lubricants, multi-station progressive feeding, and more. In addition to the stamping tonnage, also take into account the number of strokes, feeding device, machine tool, and mold protection devices.
6. The manufacturing methods and processes for the aforementioned molds are not possessed or mastered by every company. When selecting a collaborating manufacturer, it is crucial to understand their processing capabilities, not only in terms of hardware equipment but also by considering their management level, processing experience, and technical strength.
7. There can be significant price variations for the same mold from different manufacturers. You should not pay more than the mold's value nor less than its cost. Mold manufacturers, like you, need to achieve a reasonable profit in their business. Ordering a mold with a much lower quote can lead to trouble. Users must assess based on their own requirements.
Avoid fragmented collaboration and strive for a one-stop service from plastic mold making to product processing.
1. Having a qualified mold (sample is qualified) does not guarantee the production of a batch of qualified products. This mainly relates to the selection of processing machinery for the parts, the forming process (forming temperature, forming time, etc.), and the technical proficiency of the operator.
2. With a good mold, you also need excellent forming processing. It's all about seamless collaboration, avoiding fragmented partnerships as much as possible. If the conditions aren't met, choose one party to be responsible, and make sure it's clearly stated in the contract.
