Sodium sulfide, also known as caustic alkali, caustic soda, yellow alkali, and sulfide of soda, is an inorganic compound. Pure sodium sulfide is a colorless crystalline powder with strong hygroscopic properties and is easily soluble in water. Its aqueous solution exhibits a strong alkaline reaction. Contact with skin and hair can cause burns. Therefore, sodium sulfide is commonly referred to as sulfide of soda. Sodium sulfide solutions slowly oxidize in air to form sodium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite, sodium sulfate, and polysulfide. Due to the faster formation of sodium thiosulfate, it is the main product of oxidation. Sodium sulfide absorbs moisture in the air, undergoes carbonation, and deteriorates, continuously releasing hydrogen sulfide gas. Industrial sodium sulfide, containing impurities, is pink, brown-red, or earthy yellow in color. Its specific gravity, melting point, and boiling point also vary due to impurities.
