The twelve animals stone, originally known as "Wushan Twelve Peaks," as recorded in old chronicles: "There are twelve exquisite stones, rising from the flat ground, delicate and slender, standing apart like mountains, each named after its image: the pen holder, the incense burner, the chessboard, the elephant's trunk, the jade bamboo, the turtle's breath, the coiling dragon, the sword spring, the ox's resting place, the dancing crane, the singing phoenix, and the crouching tiger." The people of Hangzhou, recognizing that the shapes of these stones resemble the animals of the Chinese zodiac—rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog, and pig—have named them collectively as "The Twelve Animals Stones."
