· DefinitionGantry crane, also known as overhead traveling crane, commonly referred to as gantry, is a type of bridge crane variant. It features two support legs beneath the main beam, allowing it to travel directly on ground tracks, and the main beam can have cantilever arms extending from both ends.

Structural Composition

· Metal StructureIt is the mechanical framework of the crane, consisting of the bridge girder and the portal girder, used for installing various mechanisms and bearing the load and weight transmitted by the crane. The bridge girder is mainly composed of the main beam and end beam, while the portal girder consists of the main beam, legs, and upper and lower crossbeams.
· Lifting MechanismUsed for lifting or lowering cargo, it is the most important and fundamental mechanism in cranes. Depending on the operating conditions, it can be selected in either hoist or winch style. Generally, it consists of a driving unit, wire rope winding system, lifting device, and safety protection device.
· Operating MechanismThe system is primarily composed of two major parts: the operating support device and the operating drive device. The operating support device is designed to bear the crane's own weight and external loads, transferring all loads to the track foundation structure. It mainly includes balancing devices, wheels, and tracks. The operating drive device is used to propel the crane along the tracks, primarily consisting of an electric motor, a reducer, and a brake.


 

Working Principle

Gantry cranes operate by combining two horizontal (lateral and longitudinal) movements, along with a lifting mechanism for vertical cargo movement, within a rectangular area and its overhead space. Track cranes move along the tracks laid on the ground, limiting their working range to the area covered by the tracks; whereas wheel-mounted cranes are not restricted by tracks, offering a wider range of movement, allowing not only forward and backward movement but also 90° turns left and right, enabling them to shift from one storage yard to another for operation.

· Track-type container gantry craneThe lifting speed is lower while the large vehicle operates at a higher speed. The small vehicle speed can be determined based on the bridge girder span and the distance extended at both ends. The electrical drive system utilizes thyristor DC or AC variable speed drive control systems.
· Tyred Container Gantry CranesEfficiently utilizes yard space; relatively low yard construction costs; flexible and adaptable; strong versatility. Can rotate 90° on wheels to move from one container area to another for operations.
· Shore container craneA specialized crane for loading and unloading containers at container terminals, featuring a large span, high speed, and efficiency, capable of placing containers into any position on a container ship.
· Electric Hoist Girder CraneAesthetically pleasing design, strong load-bearing capacity, high precision, and easy operation.
· Cranes for bridge constructionAssembly does not require the transportation and hoisting site for precast beams in the direction of the bridge pier axis. Compared to crane jibs, the side shifting method has higher construction efficiency, less damage to the beams, lower installation deviation, and significantly reduces the construction period and saves costs compared to traditional methods, meeting safety construction requirements.
