As the workpiece rotates, the two circular cutting tools roll into the workpiece to form the spline.

Machine tools are suitable for straight and helical splines on various shaft parts such as automotive transmission gear shafts, ball joint constant-velocity joints, spline shafts, motor shafts, textile rollers, torsion springs, steering gears, crankshafts, and other shaft components.
