The fume hood is an essential safety equipment in a laboratory, primarily used for expelling indoor waste gases. It is a commonly used laboratory device for expelling harmful gases and for cleaning and draining during experiments.
The primary function of a fume hood: The main function of a fume hood is exhaust, especially in a chemical laboratory where harmful gases, odors, and flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances are produced during experiments. To ensure the safety of users and prevent the spread of contaminants from experiments into the lab, fume hoods are used near the source of pollution. In the past, fume hoods were used sparingly, mainly for experiments involving harmful and dangerous gases or those that generate a large amount of heat. The fume hood primarily serves as an auxiliary function to the lab table.
The purpose of using a fume hood is to exhaust harmful gases produced during experiments, protecting the health of the experimenters. This means it must have a high level of safety and operability. Therefore, the fume hood should possess the following functions:
Release Function: The system should be equipped with an institution that dilutes harmful gases generated inside the fume hood by absorbing external air from the cabinet, and then discharges them outdoors.
Non-backflow function: The function should ensure that the air flow generated by the exhaust fan within the fume hood does not reverse and flow back into the room. To achieve this function, it is advisable to connect a fume hood with a single duct to a ventilation fan. For those that cannot be connected with a single duct, they should only be linked within the same room on the same floor. The ventilation fan should be installed as close to the end of the duct (or at the top of the floor) as possible.
Isolation Feature: A non-sliding glass viewport should be installed in front of the fume hood to separate the interior and exterior of the hood.
Supplementary Feature: Must have a channel or alternative device to draw in air from outside the fume hood when releasing harmful gases.
Control Wind Speed Feature: An intake speed is required to prevent harmful gases from escaping.
Thermal and corrosion-resistant properties: Some fume hoods require the installation of electric furnaces, and certain experiments produce large amounts of corrosive acidic and alkaline gases. The work surface, lining, side panels, and selected water and gas nozzles of the fume hood should all possess corrosion-resistant capabilities.
