Laboratory fume hoods are essential safety equipment, primarily used for exhausting indoor contaminants. They are commonly employed in laboratories to expel harmful gases and facilitate the cleaning and waste removal during experiments.
The primary function of a fume hood: The main function of a fume hood is exhaust, particularly in chemical laboratories where harmful gases, odors, and flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances are produced during experiments. To ensure user safety and prevent the spread of contaminants from experiments, fume hoods are used near the source of pollution. Historically, fume hoods were used sparingly, only in experiments involving harmful and dangerous gases or those that generate large amounts of heat. The fume hood primarily serves as an auxiliary function to the laboratory table.
The purpose of using a fume hood is to exhaust harmful gases generated during experiments, to protect the health of the experimenters, which means it must have high safety and operability. Therefore, the fume hood should possess the following functions:
Release Function: The equipment should be capable of diluting harmful gases generated within the fume hood by absorbing external air from outside the cabinet, and then discharging them outdoors.
Non-backflow function: The function should ensure that the air flow generated by the exhaust fan in the fume hood does not reverse flow into the room. To achieve this function, it is preferable to connect one fume hood to one exhaust fan with a single pipe. For those that cannot be connected with a single pipe, they should only be connected in the same room on the same floor. The exhaust fan should be installed as close to the end of the pipe (or at the top of the floor) as possible.
Isolation Feature: A non-sliding glass viewport should be installed in front of the fume hood to separate the inside from the outside of the cabinet.
Supplementary Feature: The unit should be equipped with a channel or alternative device to draw in air from outside the fume hood when expelling harmful gases.
Airflow control feature: An intake speed is required to prevent harmful gases from escaping.
Thermal resistance and acid/alkaline corrosion resistance: Ventilated cabinets may house electric furnaces and experiments that produce large amounts of corrosive acidic or alkaline gases. The countertops, linings, side panels, and selected water nozzles and gas nozzles should all be corrosion-resistant.
