Flanges, also known as raised face plates or flanged disks, are components used to connect shafts or to join pipe ends. They are also used on equipment for connections between two devices, such as reducer flanges. A flange connection or flange joint refers to a removable connection formed by the combination of a flange, a gasket, and bolts. Pipe flanges are those used in piping systems, while equipment flanges refer to the inlets and outlets of equipment. Flanges have holes and bolts that secure them tightly together, with gaskets used to seal the spaces between them. Flanges come in threaded (screwed) connections, welding flanges, and clamp flanges. Flanges are typically used in pairs; low-pressure pipelines can use threaded flanges, while those above 4 kg pressure require welding flanges. Two flange disks are joined with a sealing gasket and then bolted together. Flanges of different pressures have different thicknesses and require different bolts. In the case of pumps and valves, the parts that connect to pipes are also made in flange shapes, known as flange joints. Any connection that uses bolts to join two flat surfaces and is sealed is generally called a "flange," such as the connections in ventilation ducts. These components can be referred to as "flange-type parts." However, such connections are only part of a device, like the connection between a flange and a pump, so it's not appropriate to call the pump a "flange-type part." Smaller items like valves can be called "flange-type parts."
