MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a management system for workshop production. MESA defines MES as: During the process from dispatching work orders to the completion of finished products, the manufacturing execution system plays a role in conveying information to optimize production activities. In the production process, with real-time information, MES guides, initiates, responds, and reports on production activities. It provides rapid responses to changes, reduces non-value-added production activities, and enhances operational and process efficiency. MESA has proposed the functional components and integration model of MES, defining 11 modules including: Resource Management, Process Management, Unit Management, Production Tracking, Performance Analysis, Documentation Management, Human Resource Management, Equipment Maintenance Management, Process Management, Quality Management, and Data Collection.

MES is an information management system that sits between the upper-level planning management system and the lower-level industrial control, focusing on the shop floor. It provides operators and managers with execution and tracking of plans, as well as current status information for all resources (people, equipment, materials, customer demands, etc.).
