Heat sinks often use copper fins or brass heat pipes as the heat conduction medium. To prevent the copper fins from heating up and reacting with oxygen, which can degrade their thermal conductivity, they are typically coated with nickel by electroless plating. Nickel is a metal that offers a good balance between corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity. Therefore, after being treated with electroless nickel plating, the lifespan of the heat sink can be extended, and its cooling performance maintained.
