A magnetometer is an instrument used to measure magnetic induction intensity. It is made based on the principle that a small magnetic needle can deflect or vibrate under the influence of a magnetic field. From the law of electromagnetic induction, it can be deduced that for a closed loop with a given resistance R, by measuring the charge q flowing through the loop, the change in magnetic flux within the loop can be known. This is also the design principle of a magnetometer, one of its uses being to detect changes in the Earth's magnetic field.
Utilizing the principle of electromagnetic induction, the magnetic moment of a sample, which is micro-vibrating at a fixed frequency and amplitude at the center of a set of detection coils, is measured. For sufficiently small samples, the induced voltage in the detection coils due to the vibration is proportional to the sample's magnetic moment, amplitude, and vibration frequency. By measuring this voltage with a lock-in amplifier, while maintaining a constant amplitude and vibration frequency, the magnetic moment of the sample to be measured can be calculated.
