The purpose of pre-tensioning the axial force in a splined face flange nut is to enhance the reliability and tightness of the connection, preventing gaps or relative slips in the connected parts under load. Experience shows that selecting a larger pre-tensioning force is beneficial to the reliability of the threaded connection and the fatigue strength of the connecting parts.

But excessive pre-tension can cause the fastener to break during assembly or accidental overloading. Therefore, to ensure the required pre-tension for the connection without overloading the threaded fastener, it is necessary to control the pre-tension reasonably during assembly.

The type of gasket and operating pressure, as well as the operating temperature, both directly demand high strength from the fastener material. For instance, flange connections on low-pressure pipelines sealed with wrapped gaskets for highly toxic media require high-strength alloy steel fasteners, despite the low operating pressure and temperature of the pipeline. This is because a greater pressure is needed to form the initial seal with the wrapped gasket, thereby necessitating a higher load-bearing capacity for the fasteners.
