Principle of Detection
COD Determination Principle (Chromium Method): Under the presence of excess potassium dichromate and in a strongly acidic solution, with silver sulfate as a catalyst, the reduction substances in water are catalytically oxidized by heating. The COD value of the water sample is determined by establishing a relationship between the absorbance values of hexavalent or trivalent chromium and the COD value of the water sample.
Principle of Ammonium Nitrogen Determination (Nessler's Reagent Method): Ammonium nitrogen, existing in the form of free ammonia or ammonium ions, reacts with Nessler's reagent to form a pale brown complex. The ammonia nitrogen content in the water sample is determined by the proportionality between the absorbance of the complex and the amount of ammonia nitrogen.
Total Phosphorus Determination Principle (Ammonium Molybdate Method): After the sample is digested, all the phosphorus is oxidized into orthophosphates. In an acidic medium, orthophosphates react with ammonium molybdate to form phosphomolybdate polyacid in the presence of antimony salts, which is immediately reduced by ascorbic acid to form a blue complex. The total phosphorus content in the water sample is determined based on the absorbance of the complex.
Total Nitrogen Determination Principle (Alizarin Sulfate Method): The alkaline persulfate digestion process converts all forms of nitrogen into nitrates. After digestion, a masking agent is added to remove halogen-containing oxidizing substances. Then, the nitrates react with alizarin in a strongly acidic environment to form a yellow complex. The total nitrogen content in the water sample is determined by measuring the absorbance of the complex.
