Axial gum channels are clearly visible to the naked eye, forming long, white, dot-like lines. Fresh material emits a strong camphor scent. Within this genus, there are differences in the strength of the scent, the presence or absence of wavy grain patterns, with weaker scents like D.rappa (mossy borneol), scentless varieties like D.keithi (Keith's borneol), and those with wavy grain patterns being aromatic borneol (D.aromatica) and elliptical-leaf borneol (Doblongifolia).
