Sheet pile definition
Steel sheet piles are a type of shaped steel with locking lips, featuring cross-sections in straight plate, channel, and Z shapes, available in various sizes and interlocking types. Common types include Larssen and拉克万纳(Lakvanah) styles. Their advantages include high strength, ease of driving into hard soil layers; they can be constructed in deep water and can be reinforced with diagonal supports to form a cofferdam if necessary. They have excellent waterproofing performance; they can be assembled into various shapes of cofferdams as needed and can be reused multiple times, making their applications extensive.

Steel sheet piles are categorized into: There are two types of steel sheet pile products according to the production process, namely cold-formed thin-walled steel sheet piles and hot-rolled steel sheet piles.
(1) Cold-formed steel sheet piles come in two types: non-interlocking cold-formed steel sheet piles (also known as channel plates) and interlocking cold-formed steel sheet piles (categorized into L, S, U, and Z shapes). Production Process: Thinner plates (commonly 8mm to 14mm thick) are continuously rolled into shape within a cold bending machine. Advantages: Low investment in production line, lower production costs, and flexible control over product dimensions. Disadvantages: Uniform thickness throughout the pile, resulting in increased steel consumption due to unoptimized cross-sectional sizes; difficult to control the shape of the locking section; loose fit at the connection tabs, leading to poor water-tightness; and the pile is prone to tearing during use.
(2) Hot-Rolled Steel Sheet Piles - There are several main categories of hot-rolled steel sheet piles worldwide, including U-shaped, Z-shaped, AS-shaped, and H-shaped, with dozens of specifications. Currently, the production, processing, and installation techniques for Z-shaped and AS-shaped sheet piles are more complex, predominantly used in Europe and America; while in China, U-shaped sheet piles are more common. Production Process: Formed through high-temperature rolling by a section rolling mill. Advantages: Standardized dimensions, superior performance, reasonable cross-section, high quality, and a tight, water-tight locking joint. Disadvantages: Higher technical difficulty, higher production costs, and inflexible specifications.
In construction projects, the application scope of cold-formed steel sheet pile is relatively narrow, mostly serving as supplementary materials. Hot-rolled steel sheet pile has always been the leading product in engineering applications. Due to the many advantages of steel sheet piles in construction operations, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine, and the National Standardization Administration jointly issued the national standard for "Hot-rolled U-shaped steel sheet pile" on May 14, 2007, which was formally implemented on December 1, 2007. At the end of the 20th century, Ma Steel Co., Ltd., leveraging the technological equipment conditions of imported rolling production lines, produced over 5,000 tons of U-shaped steel sheet piles with a width of 400mm and successfully applied them in projects such as the Nenjiang Bridge cofferdam, Jingjiang New Century Shipbuilding Factory's 300,000-ton shipyard, and the Bangladesh flood control project. However, due to low production efficiency, poor economic returns, low domestic demand, and insufficient technical experience during the trial production period, it was unable to sustain production. Statistics show that the annual consumption of steel sheet piles in China currently remains around 30,000 tons, accounting for only 1%%, and is limited to certain port, wharf, shipyard construction projects, and temporary projects such as bridge cofferdams and foundation pit support.
Cold-formed steel sheet piles are steel structures formed by continuous rolling into shape using a cold-forming machine, with the side lock lips capable of continuous overlapping to form a sheet pile wall. These cold-formed steel sheet piles are made from thinner plates (common thicknesses range from 8mm to 14mm) and are processed using a cold-forming machine. They have lower production costs and are more affordable, with flexible dimension control. However, due to the simplistic manufacturing process, the thickness of each part of the pile is uniform, and the cross-sectional dimensions cannot be optimized, leading to increased steel consumption; the shape of the lock lips is difficult to control, causing loose fitments at the joints and inability to prevent water from seeping in; the production is limited by the capacity of the cold-forming equipment, allowing only for products with lower strength grades and thinner thicknesses; and the large stresses generated during the cold-forming process make the piles prone to tearing during use, thus having significant limitations in application. In construction projects, the application scope of cold-formed steel sheet piles is relatively narrow, mostly serving as supplementary materials. Characteristics of cold-formed steel sheet piles: They can select an economical and reasonable cross-section of the steel sheet piles based on the actual conditions of the project, optimizing the design of the sheet piles and saving 10-15% of materials compared to hot-rolled steel sheet piles of the same performance, thereby reducing construction costs.
Currently, due to limitations in production conditions and scale, there are no domestic production lines for hot-rolled steel sheet piles. The hot-rolled steel sheet piles used in our country all come from abroad.
Common hot-rolled steel sheet pile manufacturers include Hyundai Steel Mill in South Korea, Nippon Steel Mill in Japan, Sumitomo Steel Mill in Japan, JFE Steel Mill in Japan, and several European manufacturers.
