Coupling, also known as a coupling joint, is a mechanical component used to firmly connect the driving and driven shafts of different mechanisms for simultaneous rotation, while transmitting motion and torque. It is also sometimes used to connect shafts to other parts (such as gears, pulleys, etc.). Typically, it is composed of two halves, connected by keys or tight fits, secured at the ends of the shafts, and then joined together in some manner. The coupling can compensate for offsets between the shafts due to inaccuracies in manufacturing and installation, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion (including axial, radial, angular, or combined offsets); as well as mitigate impacts and absorb vibrations.

Common couplings are generally standardized or specificationized. Typically, it's just a matter of selecting the correct type of coupling, determining the model and size. In case of necessity, load capacity checks should be performed on the vulnerable parts. At high rotational speeds, centrifugal forces on the outer periphery and deformation of the elastic elements should also be calculated, and balance checks should be conducted.
