Couplings, also known as coupling joints, are mechanical components used to firmly connect the driving and driven shafts of different mechanisms for simultaneous rotation, while transmitting motion and torque. They are also sometimes used to connect shafts to other parts (such as gears, pulleys, etc.). Typically, they are composed of two halves, connected by keys or tight fits, secured at the ends of the shafts, and then joined together in some manner. Couplings can compensate for offsets between the shafts due to inaccuracies in manufacturing and installation, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion (including axial, radial, angular, or combined offsets); as well as mitigate impacts and absorb vibrations.

Most commonly used couplings are standardized or specificationized. Generally, it's just a matter of correctly selecting the type of coupling, determining the model and size. In case of necessity, load capacity calculations can be performed on the vulnerable weak points. When operating at high speeds, it's also necessary to check the centrifugal force on the outer edge and the deformation of the elastic components, and perform balance verification, etc.
