Coupling, also known as a shaft coupling, is a mechanical component used to securely connect the driving shaft and the driven shaft of different mechanisms for simultaneous rotation. It transmits motion and torque. It can also be used to connect shafts to other parts (such as gears, pulleys, etc.). Typically, it consists of two halves, connected by keys or tight fits, mounted at the ends of the shafts and then joined together in some manner. The coupling can compensate for misalignments between the two shafts due to manufacturing, installation inaccuracies, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion (including axial, radial, angular, or combined misalignments); as well as mitigate shock and absorb vibration.

Common couplings are generally standardized or specified. Typically, it's just a matter of selecting the correct type of coupling, determining the model and size. In cases where necessary, load capacity calculations for the vulnerable parts should be performed. When operating at high speeds, centrifugal forces on the outer edge and deformation of the elastic elements should be checked, along with balance verification.
