The梅花 couplings, also known as claw couplings, are widely used and consist of two metal claw disks and an elastic element. The metal claw disks are typically made of 45# steel, but aluminum alloys are also used for their load sensitivity requirements.

A coupling, also known as a shaft coupling, is a mechanical component used to firmly connect the driving shaft and the driven shaft of different mechanisms for simultaneous rotation, while transmitting motion and torque. It is also sometimes used to connect shafts to other parts (such as gears, pulleys, etc.). Typically, it is composed of two halves, connected by keys or tight fits, secured at the ends of the shafts, and then joined together in some manner. The coupling can compensate for misalignments between the two shafts due to manufacturing and installation inaccuracies, deformation during operation, or thermal expansion, including axial, radial, angular, or combined misalignments; and it can also mitigate impacts and absorb vibrations.

Most commonly used couplings are standardized or specified, typically requiring only the correct selection of the coupling type, determination of the model and size. In case of necessity, load capacity calculations for the vulnerable weak points should be performed; when operating at high speeds, centrifugal forces on the outer periphery and deformation of the elastic elements must be verified, as well as balance checks and the like.
