Steel fibers are primarily used in the production of steel fiber reinforced concrete. Any method of producing steel fibers can enhance the strength of concrete. Concrete with steel fibers experiences significant improvements in compressive, tensile, flexural, impact, and toughness properties. Steel fiber concrete maintains the same mixing, handling, and construction properties as regular concrete, with fibers evenly distributed and not balling up. It can be produced at commercial concrete batching plants and used for pumping applications. The early slump loss of milled steel fiber concrete is considerable, with a 32% loss after 30 minutes and 42% after 2 hours. The workability of steel fiber concrete is superior to that of regular concrete with the same slump. Steel fiber concrete boasts excellent material properties, with a 2-20% increase in compressive strength, a 20-50% increase in flexural strength, a 20-40% increase in split tensile strength, and approximately a 40% improvement in wear resistance. Its physical properties fully meet the technical specifications for urban road projects and components like manhole covers. The rough yet clean surface of steel fibers allows for a strong bond with the cement paste in concrete, which is the fundamental reason for the enhancement of concrete's various properties.
