Hydropower gate structures are civil engineering works that cutoff water from reservoirs or rivers. They consist of an inlet channel and an upper structure. Emergency gates that can close quickly are known as rapid closure gates. The emergency gates are opened in still water after upstream and downstream equalization. The operation of the maintenance gates, located upstream, also requires still water conditions. The upper structure of the intake has a gate operating mechanism and cleaning equipment. The tailwater gate of the hydropower plant primarily serves to prevent sudden floods or other causes from causing the river water level to exceed the tailwater level, leading to backflow of tailwater into the plant, which could result in flooding accidents. The likelihood of using the tailwater gate is not high in normal circumstances.
