Desulfurization Process Introduction - Ammonia-based Desulfurization (Part 3)

Ammonia-based flue gas desulfurization technology is one of the currently commercialized methods for desulfurization. This desulfurization process not only removes sulfur but also recovers materials from flue gas for resource utilization, thereby reducing the occurrence of acid rain pollution. The ammonia-based desulfurization process involves the absorption of SO2. In practical applications, different ammonia-based processes differ only in the methods used to remove the absorbent solution. Different methods yield different products. The ammonia-based flue gas desulfurization process can be divided into three major steps: desulfurization absorption, intermediate product treatment, and byproduct manufacturing. Based on the process and byproducts, it can further be categorized into ammonia-fertilizer, ammonia-acid, and ammonia-ammonium sulfite methods, among others.

Ammonia-based desulfurization boasts the following advantages: strong reaction drive (liquid-gas reaction, large contact area, high desulfurization efficiency); high adaptability to flue gas conditions (can accommodate significant fluctuations in gas volume and concentration); stable source of desulfurizing agent (can achieve waste-to-waste treatment for enterprises with synthetic ammonia and coking gas production); a large and valuable market for desulfurization by-products, mature technology, reliable operation, and low operating costs (desulfurization products offset most of the operating costs); no secondary pollution (no wastewater, waste sludge, or CO2 emissions); cost-effective investment (no need for wastewater and waste sludge treatment units, flue gas treatment tower top is directly discharged, no need for separate wet flue gas stack or concrete corrosion treatment).
