Steel-plastic geogrid reinforcement of shallow soft soil foundation achieves good results

    2023-10-12

The steel-plastic geogrid outperforms traditional grids with its characteristics such as high strength, strong load-bearing capacity, corrosion resistance, anti-aging, large friction coefficient, uniform apertures, ease of construction, and long service life. It is particularly suited for deep-sea operations and embankment reinforcement, fundamentally addressing the technical challenges of other materials used in gabions, such as low strength, poor corrosion resistance, and short service life due to long-term seawater erosion.

Laying a side displacement restraint on the surface of soft soil foundations yields excellent results. Why so? The reinforcement effect of steel-plastic geogrids on shallow soft soil foundations, along with on-site monitoring of highway soft soil foundation stability, determines the calculation parameters of soil and steel-plastic geogrids through tests. Applying finite element theory, we study the stability of shallow soft soil foundations under graded loading conditions and analyze the influencing factors of the reinforced effect of steel-plastic geogrids.

As the embankment fill increases, the tensile strength of the steel-plastic geogrid gradually increases, with a tendency for the peak tension to shift gradually towards the centerline of the subgrade. The increased reinforcing modulus enhances the geogrid's lateral displacement constraint at points beneath the slope, without affecting the settlement changes at the embankment bottom. Laying multiple layers of steel-plastic geogrid provides better treatment than a single layer, though not significantly. If only one layer is laid, the surface placement on soft soil foundations offers excellent lateral displacement constraint.

The installation of steel-plastic geogrids in Shandong can effectively control the lateral displacement of soft soil foundations, while showing little effect on reducing the vertical displacement of embankments. After the installation of the geogrid, the lateral displacement of the soft soil foundation tends to gradually extend deeper, with a significant reduction in lateral displacement within a 2.5-meter depth range vertically along the embankment's slope foot. As the embankment fill increases, the tension of the steel-plastic geogrid also increases, and there is a trend for the peak tension to move towards the centerline of the subgrade.
