How to Quickly Identify the Cause of a Fault in Solar Street Lights

Solar street lights operate in a relatively simple manner, involving a charging and discharging process. During the day, the solar panels generate electricity, and at night, the battery powers the light head. This cycle repeats daily. Should a solar street light malfunction, such as a reduced lighting duration or non-functioning lights, how can we identify the cause?

Firstly, determine if the lighting duration of the lamps is short or non-existent. If the lighting duration is short, it indicates a problem with the lamp configuration or insufficient power generation from the solar panel. Possible reasons include an unreasonably small configuration or a thick layer of dust on the solar panel, which is common in riverbank areas. In winter, with shorter days of continuous overcast weather, this issue can be resolved by cleaning the solar panel. Regular maintenance based on the dust accumulation is recommended. Secondly, if the lamps are not illuminating, the most common causes are a faulty controller or a dead battery. LED lamp head damage is rare, and solar panel damage is also uncommon. If the controller is at fault, the troubleshooting method involves measuring the voltage of the solar panel and battery with a voltmeter. If the voltage is above 12v during daylight, indicating no issue with the solar panel, and the battery voltage is also above 10v, indicating a normal battery, we can consider replacing the controller. If the lamp lights up within 1 to 2 days after replacement, it confirms the controller as the issue. Generally, non-illuminating issues with both the solar panel and battery are rare. If the solar panel voltage is below 10v during daylight, check if the wiring is secure. If the wiring is fine and the voltage remains low, it might indicate a solar panel issue, though this is very rare. Most often, the problem lies with the battery, which may have a low voltage below 10v. In such cases, the controller might be at fault, causing the battery to discharge and not recharge adequately, or the battery quality may be subpar due to long-term use, leading to high internal resistance and inability to charge or discharge normally.
