Stone railings are a particularly common component in traditional Chinese architecture. They are used to enclose corridors, bridge sides, flower beds, gardens, pavilions, terraces, and more, to prevent accidents. The Song Dynasty referred to it as "gou lan," commonly used on platforms with a Sumeru base, though also found on regular platforms. Stone carved railings typically consist of three parts: the column shaft, the railing panel, and the ground beam. The column shaft is divided into two parts: the shaft itself and the column head.
