Sprocket shafts are a type of mechanical transmission, similar in function to flat keys, half-moon keys, and wedged keys, all used for transferring mechanical torque. They have longitudinal keyways on their outer surface, and the rotating parts mounted on the shaft also have corresponding keyways to ensure synchronous rotation with the shaft. Some can also slide longitudinally along the shaft, such as gear shift gears in a transmission.
