Nickel hydroxide is a reducing hydroxide that can react with certain strong oxidizing agents to form NiO(OH). It exhibits strong alkalinity, classifying it as a moderately strong base. In a saturated aqueous solution (5% mass concentration), it can ionize to produce a large amount of OH- ions and a small quantity of [Ni(OH)6]4- anions. It is also soluble in strong bases like NaOH and KOH, forming compounds such as Na4[Ni(OH)6] or K4[Ni(OH)6]. Upon evaporation, it yields easily hydrolysable salts like Na4NiO3.
