How to Identify the Front and Back Sides of Dust-Free Paper

Dust-free paper is typically very thin, making it difficult to tell the front from the back.

1. Direct Method: Fold a test sheet and observe the relative smoothness of one side. The diamond pattern from the papermaking mesh can usually identify the mesh surface. Hold it horizontally and properly aligned, so that the incident light forms a 45-degree angle with the paper surface, and the line of sight also forms a 45-degree angle with the paper surface.

Inspect the webbing marks on the paper surface. Microscopic examination of the paper can also aid in identifying the webbing.

2. Hold one hand with the test sheet, aligning it vertically with your line of sight and parallel to the surface of the sheet. Use your other hand to pull the paper upwards, thus initially tearing it vertically. Then, gradually shift the direction of the tear towards the horizontal, towards the outer edge of the paper.

Peel and turn the paper over. On the other side, tear the paper again in the same manner, and compare the paper fibers along the two tear lines - those on one line are more pronounced than on the other. Especially at the curve where the tear turns from vertical to horizontal, the paper fibers are clearly web-like.

When the web is facing up, the frayed edges of the dust-free paper are more pronounced.

3. Wet Method: Soak the dust-free paper surface in water, drain off the excess liquid, let it sit for a few minutes, inspect both sides; if there is a clear screen print, it is the reverse side.
